I have to create a 4' by 6' poster and I was wondering which software would be the best. I will have quite a lot of detail to put in the poster, will powerpoint be ok, or should I use something else?

Answer:
Take a look at what the other person suggested, it might work for you for something simple and quick. Please do NOT use PowerPoint. PowerPoint is intended for computer-based presentations, thus the resolutions (think quality of image) do not have to be very high. Despite what Microsoft might want you to think, PowerPoint is NOT a design program, and is certainly not intended for printed (especially LARGE projects like yours) projects.

What you may want to look into learning is Photoshop and Illustrator, they are design programs, they are used by design companies, artists, graphic designers, and so on for doing all sorts of designs, and you can save out file types that can be printed almost anywhere. I know they are expensive programs, but if you really want to produce high quality materials they are worth learning.

And note: Illustrator has the advantage of working with vectors vs. Photoshop which uses rasters (pixels on your screen). Vectors are resolution-independent. You can create a design at small size and then enlarge it as much as you want. Can't do that with Photoshop/image editors/raster programs

Good luck!
