Upgrading your new computer from Vista to the older XP was very smart move that puts you to the head of the class. Once you have decided to do it, you then must understand the job ahead of you is not as simple as using a CD to install right over your Vista. I believe Dell has tech support and you may want to call them to help you though it and get the drivers you will need. If you are unable to use Dell, here is the right way to get XP loaded onto your system.

The main hurdle in installing XP on a Vista ready system are the system drivers. Drivers tell the operating system how to use the hardware in your system. If your are not familiar with drivers, you may want to get a computer savvy friend to help with this install.
There are drivers on the internet for almost all hardware for Windows XP, its just a matter of finding the right ones.
Before popping the Windows XP CD in the drive and installing, you will want to go to the device manager and write down all the names and model numbers for your hardware.
Be specific.. Make sure to record Hard drive controller(SATA), Video, Sound, USB, Network, Wireless and any devices that may be specific to your system.
You were also very smart in stopping when you did. If you can, please read this link and then call Dell. They should have all the drivers you need and be able to find them faster than you. For you, it could take three days sometimes. They know the hardware you have and have to have the drivers for the software.
It's better to follow their directions from the telephone
Answer:
Don't load Vista - boot from the XP CD directly.
Answer:
What you need to do is reboot your PC while that CD is in your drive, then follow the on-screen instructions for rebuilding your PC. Make sure you've saved any data from your PC that you don't want to lose.
Answer:
since vista recognized the version as an older one, you are not permitted to do it because you are merely trying to "upgrade" vista rather than "downgrade". you can't do this if you're on windows.
so you need to go to bios, change the order of booting so that your cd drive boots first. insert your win xp cd and reboot. now, just follow the instructions as they appear. a liitle bit of advice, to start entirely fresh, delete all partitions during the start of the installation and make new ones. format them and proceed with the installation.
Answer:
format your hard drive, and then install.
see, cuz Vista is newer than XP, it says that cuz you would be downgrading, and Vista thinks that sould not happen.
but, who cares about Vista, erase it and install XP.
besides, the more people who use XP, the longer it will be suppoted
Answer:
I have asked this same question to the techs. at circut city and they told me it could be done but it had to be done by going thru manually and installing all the components and would be very costly,
What you are getting in that message is telling you windows xp is not xcompatible with vista OS
