hi all..
i need to find non windows freeware and open source operating systems… linux or not, i dont care as long as what u answer rox… knoppix is already at my download list and i want any other options… i may download solaris but i need ur help in making decisions.. i need suggestions on other os. thanks…
note, os iso must not exceed 700mb, i dont want to download that long…

There's no such thing as "Best" anything, only what's best for YOU. If you could re-post and explain exactly what you're looking for in an alternate OS, then maybe we could help.
But, I'll stick my neck out a little here and assume you want an OS that is easy to learn by "Windows Switchers" and malware free.
I really like Ubuntu (Live CD), but recently discovered LinuxMint 4.0 Daryna, a Live CD, too, and liked it so much i installed it on all my PCs and WinDoze is now gone.
NOTE: A Live CD lets you try Linux, before your install it on your hard drive, to test all your hardware for compatibility.

Your best bet and the new darling of open source OSes is Ubuntu. It is a Linux flavor OS but it also has a beautiful GUI that is similar to MS Windows. So you get the best of both worlds, easy to use and very stable and reliable

Ubuntu or Knoppix…….Both Linux varieties but knoppix is easier to use and can be run from a cd or dvd…..cd version does not have all the bells and whistles but functions the same as the dvd version and falls within your size limit. Ubuntu is about the same but takes a larger space.
