I will be replacing windows vista basic on a brand new laptop:
Acer Aspire 4315
Intel Celeron 1.73 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 1 MB L2 cache
512 MB RAM

Answer:
Ubuntu is a great operating system, and it's easy to use compared to other Linux distributions. However, don't expect it to perform miracles. If you know your way around Linux, you can plan on spending a few hours trying to get all of your drivers working properly. If you don't know your way around, you may never get your drivers working properly (unless you're lucky and they work out of the box, which isn't likely).
So, if you get it working, then yes, it's worth the effort. But don't expect it to be easy for you.
