I am thinking about getting Ubuntu, but I have a few questions first.
1. Can I use my Zune (and software) with Ubuntu, or do I’ve to have the Zune software to put files on it.?
2. Is it worth it? I am sick of the RAM hungry Vista OS. All I really do is surf on Firefox, do homework, store text docs, and listen to music.
3. Are there any other free linux based OS's available that are superior?
Answer:
Wine is a pretty good Windows Emulator but Microsoft HATES Linux and most Linux people don't trust them — zune supplanted an earlier music thing which they abandoned, ending support for the tunes which had sold. There’s not a lot of support for supporting Zune.
2. Linux is different. Ubuntu is trying to present an substitute for the non-technically oriented. Since you outnumber us Ubuntu installations are quickly outnumbering our distributions, but Linux is still an adjustment after Windows. If all you really do are what you mentioned, the sticking poiint is MAINLY Zune, but I would dual-boot. Check out:

3. Superior for what? There’s a Linux distro for everything. One of my favorites is Hikarunix which is optimized for playing Go. If you aren't heavy into technology I would say Ubuntu has great support and you should try it — but look at Wubi before you install it.
Answer:
Below is a Linux Distro that always runs Live off the disk (cd or DVD) You can save your config files to a flash drive as well as your homework. ( if you’ve enough Ram you can load the whole OS to ram and set up configs so it uses no swap space and runs absolutely from ram. Runs faster than using the live disk because rams read writes peed is faster than that of your Hdd)
As for ubuntu running your Zune. Go to the ubuntu sites and check out the forums. It would have to run inside WIne. Which can be easily installed through synaptic package manager. I would recommend buying a new Hard drive and install Ubuntu onto that and dual boot with vista. Then you can run either OS and any homework and files you’ve in Vista are accessable in Ubuntu.
