does anyone know why ubuntu only allows me to use 'none' visual effects in appearence preferences and why i choose 'normal' or 'extra' it states desktop effects could not be enabled'? very irritating seing as i installed ubuntu partly for its aesthetically amusing effects

You may have an unsupported video card. If you’ve a newer NVIDIA or ATI card, you’ve to download drivers for them. Use the Restricted Drivers manager to install them.
