What is the ideal software to compress data (eg, rar, zip)??

What software such as rar, is the ideal for compressing data, i mean i want to know what compressing software compresses files the most

The most widely used is ZIP on the Computer. It is NOT the best as others have said. It's been around the longest. However it does not compress as well as RAR AND, most importantly, isn’t 100% foolproof. It can and often does inject errors into the zip file.

However if you’re planning on using file compression on your documents and files and will be distributing them around to various people then your ideal choice is ZIP because of it's availability to the receivers.

If this is for personal use RAR is superior.

Compression is also based on the type of file you’re compressing. It's not odd that a heavy text type object could compress that far. So RAR ARJ and ZIP play a role but so does WHAT you compress. Report Abuse

Winzip is good. Use the “tight” or highest compression setting to get the smallest resulting file. Takes a bit longer to compress.

I'd suggest 7zip. I'm not sure if it has the ideal compression but it has very good compression compared to other common programs.
