I'm assuming you’ve an electric guitar. I went to RadioShack and got a mono adapter to go from 1/4-inch (guitar cable jack) to 3.5mm (headphone jack). Then all you’ve to do is plug your guitar cable into the audio in port on your Mac. It sounds awesome, and you can add a ton of effects (no need for pedals - they’re all built into GarageBand).
For vocals I bought a mic cord that has XLR (standard mic plug) on one end and 1/4-inch (guitar cord jack) on the other. Then you can simply use the same adapter you used on the guitar to record vocals! My mic isn't all that great, but if you have a nice mic the above method will work fine.
The 1/4-inch to 3.5mm adapter cost me $4.99 at RadioShack. It's too easy!
The one downside is that you can only record one track at a time. If you want to record multiple tracks at one (like guitar and vocals in one take) you’ve to spend a pretty large chunk of change on more accessories. The good (but not best) ones run about $400-500.
PS - check out Apple.Com for some awesome video tutorials for GarageBand.
Good luck!

I've only used Garage Band to record audio programs (vocals and sound effects). You'll need a microphone, obviously, to record vocals. If you want the guitar separately, you can record it with the microphone and then layer the vocals over it. We’d to do that with some homemade sound effects.
There may be another way to hook up the guitar to get a cleaner sound, though.
