How can I view a video file in my Laptop?

I asked my friend to send me a video file of Gossip Girl. The file is clearly a video file. However, whenever I play it in Nero and Windows, it wouldn't produce the image. So I thought the two programs were dysfunctional, so I dowloaded realplayer. But the same thing happens,only, unlike the other two, it would give a notice that a part of the file can't be presented. And indeed the image, didn’t appear again!!! What happened? What shall I do? This is a new laptop, not one week old yet. Help!!!

did u downloaded that one properly.

check the extension of the file. and search the video player in google. download and install. otherwise tell your friend to send again
