I want to use iTunes on my computer, but it just got refurbrished today (its installed) and i'm not sure if i should take the chance at destroying the hard drive (kind of like i did last time). It's a laptop, so i don't know.

i have windows 2000 and i use itunes with no problem, i just cant update to the versions that require XP or VISTA

Its just a program. Apple is very trusted. I doubt youll download iTunes and plug in your ipod and your laptop will be like Rawr *****! Then die.. If your laptop is that crappy i advise you buy a new one.
