Had this message pop up about an hour ago. Who or what could have caused this, and how do I find out the details? Is it more likely to be a specific person trying to hack in or a random attempt from somewhere else.

Very un-savvy about these matters. Any suggestions?

Answer:
You can relax!

No one is attacking your computer in particular. No one is singling you out to be attacked. What you are describing is so commonplace, it has acquired the name "internet background noise". Totally normal and expected and nothing to worry about, as long as you are firewalled. Just a bunch of "bots" doing there thing. These bots, often of Chinese origin will scan random IP addresses and then scan each individual port to see if it is open and vulnerable. But your firewall is blocking it, and that is exactly why we use firewalls. Give your firewall a cookie. My firewall stops hundreds of these "threats" every day.

And even if you weren't firewalled, and had an open port, the attacker would need to find and exploit some vulnerability in your Windows or some other software in order to compromise your machine. So always keeping your Windows and all your other programs 100% patched and updated is necesssary also.

Really, much ado about nothin'!

Answer:
Its more then likely nothing. I used to have it and it would go off every ten minutes. If its telling you someone tried, it means someone failed, which is good, so dont worry

Answer:
hurrah! for Symtec his a hero, so courageous to fend off those computer bashers!

Answer:
Check to see if your windows firewall is switched on.Norton has a habit off turning it off.

Answer:
i always have that whenever i shut down my laptop then turn it on again… so far, no damage has been done so that's probably a good thing.

Answer:
It's easy to get paranoid about this and assume that you are being targeted.

The fact is that hackers, spammers and all manner of weirdos use automated probes to search for computers with little or no defences. This is going on all the time and not just to you alone. You are not alone and the message you got was your firewall "bragging" that it had detected and repulsed a port probe. In other words it's doing its job.

Answer:
First of all it's Symantec, not "Symtec", and it looks like you've got Norton installed!

I personally avoid Norton like the plague, but if you have it installed then there should be instructions on how to remove this virus!
