When I was looking around the configuration part of my computer it asked if I wanted to turn the firewall on. Which I did. The explaination of what a firewall is was what I thought an anti-virus is.
Do you need to pay for a Norton Anti-virus or similar or is the computer's firewall enough?
Answer:
Avast is free

Comodo Firewall Pro free and good

Answer:
If I was you I wouldn't get Norton Anti Virus, I won't get into why because it will probably just confuse you more but I would advise you if you wanted a free to get AVG 8 (Link Below) of if you wanted to pay I would go for Kaspersky (Link Below) Both of which are good pieces of software.
Basically a firewall monitor's what's coming in and out of you're computer, a Anti Virus and Anti Spyware check's thing's for malicious code once they've entered you're personal.

www.Kaspersky.com
Answer:
no think of you're personal as a castle…sounds stupid right? just bear with me
an Antivirus is the guard at the market in the middle making sure nobody is causing trouble…if they’re he kills them (a good Antivirus does anyway)
a firewall is the guard at the town gate(s) making sure bad people dont get in to cause trouble
a firewall is essential if you dont allready have one download COMODO firewall pro its one of the ideal firewalls out there and it free
an Antivirus is essential also (if the firewall fails) if you dont allready have one you can get AVG free edition its kept up to date on what all the troublemakers look like and its pretty good at its job (you dont even have to pay him)
Answer:
What you need is a good Firewall (the MS isn’t good), at least one anti-virus & at least one anti-spyware.
Below are some site that can help, the 1st one is quite good.
The2nd gives a load of free stuff.
You need to also load CCleaner, as in TOOLs, it has an uninstaller, so if you don't like a program you can un-install it (better than MSs' one). The site looks as if it's not letting me give too many links.
CCleaner, majorgeeks.com top free ware picks for free stuff.
Answer:
A firewall is a system that secures a network, shielding it from access by unauthorized users. Firewalls can be implemented in software, hardware or a combination of both. In addition to preventing unrestricted access into a network, a firewall can also restrict data from flowing out of a network.

Answer:

Answer:
You should get Norton Anti-Virus aswell.
Because firewall just blocks stuff out
And Anti-Virus checks for virus on site you go on.
Get both for extra safety just in case one doesn't work.
Answer:
A firewall prevents someone from hacking into your personal. If you’ve AOL you get McAfee virus and firewall for free
Answer:
I'd go with avast too.
Answer:
I would concur with Soccer Dave, go with Comodo for firewall, or try On the web Armor…..both are free.
Anti-Virus:
Avast in preference to AVG, Norton or MacAfee…..built in anti-rootkit and anti-spyware, set it, forget it:

Also download and install the following:
Lavasoft AdAware2008:
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2008/30…
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Ant…
Spybot Search & Destroy:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/downl…
Spyware Physician Free Basic Edition:
http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_inst…
Its free with Google pack, untick all boxes except Spyware Doctor and Adobe Reader, which most pc's use. Download install, update and run. Remove the Google Updater from Add/Remove programs and Spyware Physician works fine, realtime monitoring included.
These are all free programs.
Want to ensure that you NEVER get any form of malware/spyware.trojan etc?
try this for 30 days for free…..remains free thereafter but lifetime license is only $30 and well worth it. No infections, no browsing history, no cookies…..and no I am not an affiliate selling a sales pitch, it's a program I use and need no anti-virus, anti-spyware etc apart from on my test machine where I test all programs.

Answer:
There are two main things that you need to protect your PC, real-time Anti-Virus software and a two way firewall (inbound and outbound) you can get them both totally free, these two work well together on XP:
Comodo Pro (firewall) and Avast Anti-Virus 4.8 Home Edition*
http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Editi…
http://www.download.com/Comodo-Firewall-…
* Install Avast then Comodo as Comodo can sometimes interfere with Avast's installation, would advocate changing Avast's default skin for the Vista style skin available from their website.
Comodo comes top in leaktests

You should only browse the internet using a limited account not an administrative account, if a virus infects your computer and you’re using an admin account it can make critical system changes, but a limited account does not have the power to make critical changes so the amount of damage a virus can do is limited.

Would also advocate that you use a safer browser like Mozilla Firefox, and download additional anti-spyware software my favourite is Ad-aware 2008.

Install the McAfee SiteAdvisor add-on - when you search for something using Yahoo, Google or MSN, site advisor displays either a green tick (safe site), yellow exclamation mark (use with care) or a red cross (dangerous site) next to every result. http://www.siteadvisor.com/
(I recommend that you try Avast before trying AntiVir as some people recommended Avira AntiVir to me so I removed Avast and installed AntiVir but I could not get it to update, the forums are full of people having the same problem)
