Answer:
First of all, your niece (or rather, a computer she uses) has a problem. She should get an anti-virus program installed with updated virus signatures and scan and clean her PC.
Second, never open a message that you feel is suspicious.
PC security starts with YOU and using your common sense. As the old saying goes 'if you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas!' In computer terms that means, if you just go around opening up anything and clicking on this and that - you will get a virus sooner than later.
Viruses are just programs written to annoy you or damage or even steal the information on your computer.
So if you want to protect yourself I would do this.
1) Contact your niece and tell her that you think a PC she uses is infected and to please clean it up.
2) Make sure a current anti-virus program is loaded on your PC - make sure you update it on at least a weekly basis.
3) Make sure a current anti-spyware program (preferably more than one) is also loaded on your PC and also make sure you update it constantly.
4) Make sure your Windows is 'patched' and updated - go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and check now!
5) Make sure you are running a personal firewall program that is current. Zonealarm is a good and FREE one - although Windows XP does come with its own included firewall which isn't the best, but is better than nothing - make sure it is turned on.
6) Lastly - surf smart! Don't click on just anything and don't open any e-mail or link you're sent. If you don't know who is sending you an e-mail - treat it with suspicion!
Good luck!
Answer:
dont open attachments from those you dont know. even be weary of those you do know.
Viruses can do anything the virus writer wanted them to. They become viruses when you execute the virus through whatever means the virus writer has thought up. When they execute, it can be something simple like continuous annoying popups to damaging files to deleting pictures. It varies through the sick imagination of the writer.
Answer:
If you do not open them, u will not get a virus, I like yahoo mail because it scans attachments and photos with norton Antivirus, let her know and tell her to swithch to yahoo mail………If you have a good Antivirus program it should catch all the bad stuff, Avira free is good also use adaware its free and so is Avira, a virus can really mess your computer up if not traeted, do a free Bit defender virus scan and removal once a month on top of your Antivirus, free Spybot Searh and Destroy is good and free it finds all kinds of nasty stuff and protects your computer from getting many of them in the first place.
Answer:
Your niece does NOT know she is sending that crap.
Her MSN has become infected with malware and it is trying to spread itself by sending those attachments to everyone in HER address book. Automatically without her knowledge.
There is nothing you can do on your end, except to inform your niece that her computer is badly infected and needs servicing.
And congrats to you for not clicking on those .exe files. Unfortunately most people do open them and that's how the worm propagates.
