or 'owner' of the site find out that I've been there, as well as know who I am? I know that sites often have counters on them so they can know how many people visited the site, but can the actual visitors location, etc., be traced as well? If so, is there any way to prevent this other than not visiting the sites? Thanks!
Answer:
Certain things can be tracked and others can not. The site owner can tell the IP addresses (numbers specific to your computer connection) that have visited the site. These won't give them your physical address or anything, but sometimes they can narrow things down quite a bit. If, for example, you work at a company that has their own servers in house, the site owner might be able to tell that "someone" from that company was on their site if their servers have been named after the company. Most likely they'll only be able to see general information about your internet provider. Take a look at the links below and you'll see what they probably see. Go to the first one to get your IP address, then type those numbers in the box at the second link and click "search". They can sometimes get a general location though which you can see at the third link.

They are watching you!

Answer:
yes they can, it logs your ip address, which can then later find more info about that ip address. but people only do that if their stalkers. in the control panel (cpanel for websites) there is a list of ip addresses that visited the website. but most of the time its used to block unwanted people (hackers, or bugging people, harrasers)
Answer:
the website will have your ip address, so they will know what state and region you are in, but they cannot trace your exact position, no
Answer:
Every time you surf, there are tracking cookies and such.
Sites usually collect some bits of information about you. Most major sites such as Amazon and Google has a Privacy Policy. Read it carefully to see what they collect
If you're VERY paranoid, you can do everything through a proxy.
"In computer networks, a proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application program) which services the requests of its clients by forwarding requests to other servers. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection, web page, or other resource, available from a different server" (Wiki)
Answer:
Yes, there are ways through witch your location can be traced, but it's rudimentary, just a country or a city which you are from. There are ways to prevent this, most popular of which is using anonymous proxies, but that will cost you a lot in the performance area. Meaning it will slow the opening of the webpages, and also preventing you to access some pages.
Answer:
If you are on a network, generally there is a server manager. You are connected on a network with several other computers to a main data bank. The network administrator may monitor and log your website activities. If you are on the job, you should be doing your JOB and not visiting websites. You don't secretly visit websites on the job anyway do to VIRUSES that may harm the business. So, unless you're a network administrator, then NO you can't stop the administrator from monitoring your computer activities. Furthermore, if you are asking this question after going to these sites, it's too late. You're manager/owner already knows.
Answer:
Your IP address is recorded, meaning that if they do a "reverse lookup" they might know roughly where you're at, and who your provider is.
That kinda' thing isn't real typical unless you really piss someone off who knows how to do that kinda thing, or have the FBI looking for you.
If you really wanted to, you could use an IP mask, but it's not going to hide you from the FBI or good hackers. Once the FBI does a reverse lookup, theyill know who your provider is, and can use that to discover your actual address.
I don't know how to use an IP mask but I suspect you could google it easily enough.
Most people worry about hiding from people needlessly. If you have a personal problem with the site owner, I'd stay away or use someone else's computer. However, if they dont know you, there's no reason to assume they'd go through the effort of trying to track you.
To each their own though.. Hope this helped
