I down loaded the free virus software form Rogers.com my internet provider and my computer was running so slow that I deleted it all & now it's back up to speed without and anti virus running. Is there a kind of software that I can purchase that won't have any affect on my computer, making it open programs slower etc. Are the virus programs you buy at the store better?

Answer:
Generally you get what you pay for.
AVG antivirs is free and relativley OK. But (for not much money) I recommend Nod32.
WHY?
a) It is extremely light weight - it doesn't use up hardly any system resources and sits in the background while you do you work (you wont even notice it)
b) it is extremely easy to use
c) It uses something called 'heuristics'. Most AV software out there requires it to have a definition file if it is to find/clean the virus on your system (ie the software is told by the manufacturer what is bad so it knows what to look for). Well the problem is, what if you are infected with something that the AV software isn't aware of? Then you're stuffed =) Heuristics is a form of artificial intelligence that uses a 'best guess' to warn you if a rouge piece of software is doing somehting that it shouldn't be doing. This is a must have today because most people are infected before the AV software has been given its definition file (ie been told about the virus to look for). So even if Nod32 comes accross a zero-day exploit (a system exploit which has no patch available) it has a good chance of informing you of the danger.
Something to think about.

Get Norton. It will not slow your computer down and it is the best on the market.
