I've heard a lot of complaints about iWeb and I know it's meant to create personal sites for family and friends, but I'm trying to create a site for a school club of mine. Members reach to somewhere in the 100s. The site will include a pic gallery, calendar, daily updated blogs, etc. I don't want a site that’ll take too long to load on your computer, plus, most of the people in the club don't use Safari as an world wide web browser. Basically, I need help deciding whether I should use iWeb, or some other program on my mac.

Answer:
iWeb is fine for basic Web design.

As far as a photo gallery, blogs, calendar, etc. go, you need server-based software to handle those services. So it matters a lot more which Web host you use and what software you can install on that server.

I would advocate http://www.dreamhost.com for your Web server. You can install WordPress (blog software), Gallery (photo gallery) and Google Calendar right from its control panel.

Answer:
The type of program that you use to build your website does not affect its load time. The images and files do.

As long as you keep the images and files on the website small, it will load fast.

I'm not familiar with iWeb, so I can't really advocate anything for that.

I assume that you're looking for a free host, right? I recommend www.justfree.com It's fast, simple to use, has a lot of applications that you can install (like Gallery), makes creating databases easy, and ideal of all you get more bandwidth and diskspace that you will ever use so there's a lot of flexibility. Basically, you get the same features as a paid host, but for free.

If you want something more professional, Microsoft Office Live Small Business is a great solutoin. It has a free easy to use web designer tool which grants you to create a website without the need to know how to do HTML/CSS coding. This is a free service and Microsoft is offering a free domain name (i.e. yourdomain.com) for the first year. Ideal of all, it works very well on Mac OS X with Firefox. Try it out:
