Please don't tell me I have the option of saving it as a WMV in windows motion picture maker because that’s not the truth (I don't have XP but the new vista and it won't let you do that, it wants to make it difficult for you and that's why I am going to bomb microsoft)
Anyway, I've already tried EM but it has expired, prism, but it has expired so what other free trial programs are out there that’ll actually let you open a WMMP file to convert it to WMV (many require you to first convert your WMMP file to a different type before you even convert it to WMV………ARGH!
I've read many answers on this but none are satisfactory…
TRY TO UNDERSTAND PEOPLE, YOU CANNOT CHOOSE HOW YOU SAVE YOUR WINDOWS MOVIE ON VISTA THE ONLY OPTIONS ARE PUBLISHING IT AS A DVD, CD, EMAIL ATTACHMENT CAMCORDER TAPE OR PLAYBACK ON YOUR OWN COMPUTER!

Answer:
After you are done with the project, click on File.
goto Publish Motion picture…
Highlight “This Computer” then click Next
Name your file then click Next
Ideal quality for playback on my personal (recommended) should be marked. (under the movie setting, you’ll see file type: wmv)
then click on Publish then you’re done having it as WMV file
PS. it will take long time to publish it. depending on the size of your file.

You might also want to try a Linux LiveCD and take a look at the future of operating systems. Mandriva is my distribution of choice.

My 2 other suggestions are: an application called SUPER.
