What does kb/s mean?
What's ping?
Answer:
kb/s means kilobits per second. There are two kb/s measurements: upstream and downstream. Downstream is the speed at which your computer is handed data from the internet. The higher the number, the faster your computer can display pages and pictures and pretty much anything from the internet. Your speed is 5697 kb/s, which is really good. Upstream is the speed at which your computer hands information to the internet - like when you upload items. Your speed here is 490 kb/s, which is below average. Since most users are more interested in downstream speeds, what you have is pretty good.
Ping is a tool that is used to determine the round trip speed between items on a network. It comes from the game ping-pong: you ping out some information and someone pongs it back to you. The information sent is called a packet and is usually 32 bytes or so. Your ping time to a server in Cincinnati (which is 50 miles from you) is 52 ms is pretty good. What it means is that it takes 52 milliseconds (about 1/20th of a second) to travel the 50 miles to Cincinnati and back.
