The reason I am asking this question is I need help in resolving a disagreement with someone.

1.8ghz Pentium 4 CPU

128mb Radeon 9250 Graphics

512mb RAM

It is not for running Vista so its not going to be squeezed to death.

My opininion is they are modest and capable.

The other person thinks they are rubbish and fit for the trash can.

Opinions please ?

Answer:
That computer is still fine as long as you stay with windows XP! , the only way that computer would be considered trash is if you put Vista on it!!!

If you upgrade the ram to 1024MB then your set to go! surf the net, download, play games made 2004 and erilyer no problem at all!

Many people may say this computer is garbage, but in most cases they are gamers and just look at it as "well this computer wont play COD4 or Crysis so it's garbage"

I build and repair computers all the time and in my opinion a Pentium 3 733MHz with 512MB ram is still fine for surfing the net with XP, so your computer is Great! but not for newer games that's all,

I agree 100% with inoa ^

My old computer was an

Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz

1.5GB of Ram

250GB Hard Drive

X1650 512MB AGP Video Card

And everyone was saying it was old……too slow…..so what did i do….

My New Computer:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz

2GB of Ram

800GB Hard Drive (500 300)

HD 3870 512MB Video Card

There was NO DIFFERENCE im performence between the two….nothing at all …exept when playing games of corse

and im not even a gamer!

Answer:
Not good specs anymore, sorry.

Answer:
I think you need more memory than that these days, and not just for vista.

Answer:
very slow

Answer:
modest for running what? its low power even for XP these days. I wouldn't run it with all the XP updates that MS has put out. The memory should be at 1 GB.

certainly it would run, but what are you trying to do with the machine?

Answer:
extremely old, struggle to run most windows applications with multiple apps up and running.

should be more then sufficient for a properly configured linux rig

or an email checker / online game player.

once you start to load up windows/office/email/internet etc thats going to start slowing down ALOT.

Answer:
Not enough ram I had that graphics card and it sucks no offense and the Pentium 4 is also junk. So yea I agree with your friend.

Answer:
I have one with worse specs that runs Windows XP just fine, I would say it is good for most anything other than modern day gaming.

Most people have to have the latest in computers, but they do very little to use all the power of today's systems. It's the old story of, "If you have that, then I have to have better".

Just think of it this way, all the people on Yahoo answers could be here with a Pentium l or ll with no problem. No they are here with their dual and quad core computers running 2GHz plus processors, with 2 or 4 gigabytes of ram, so that should answer your question.

They don't need it, but they have to have it…..

Answer:
I say its a reasonable entry level PC, to check email and stuff.

Why so many people these days think if a PC don't have a core 2 duo and a shitload of RAM its worthless?

Answer:
Those specs are awesome for running Linux. Any distro will be able to handel them and run a snappy beryl or compiz (or fusion). I'd love something that strong.
