I want to record something off the internet. I heard of Audacity, so, I've download it… now how do I use it to record what ever plays… even an alert message box beep!
Answer:
Do the following:
1. go to the task bar at the bottom of the computer screen and double click the volume icon.
2. go to options >> properties
3. fill in the bubble that says recording
4. put a checkmark in the box that states “stereo mixer” at the bottom box
5. press ok
6. Find the up and down slider that says “stereo mixer” at the top and make sure that box below has a checkmark on it.
7. Open audacity, and at the top you should see a tiny tex box with a down arrow, click the down arrow and select “stereo mixer”
8. You're done.

What Armageddon is suggesting isn't usually necessary. In your audio options where you select source (mic, line in, etc), there should be an option called “wave out mix”, “whatuhear” or similar. That's the one you want.
In Audacity, there's a drop-down list of sources next to the record volume. Pick it there (screenshot: http://i37.tinypic.com/5klwyp.jpg ). Push record then start playing your sound (you can delete the blank space at the beginning later). Just make sure the playing/recording volumes aren't too high (the wave spikes should not touch the top and bottom), otherwise, you'll get clipping. Watch it record to make sure. If it's too high, stop it and try again. A little too quiet is better than too loud, you can always normalize the volume later (in Audacity, select the track by clicking on the left side of it, then Effect -> Normalize…).
Hopefully I've saved you some time and the cost of an audio cable. ![]()

Answer:
1. Purchase a cord with two 1/8th inch jacks on either side.
2. Plug one end in the mic jack and one in the headphone jack.
3. Start record in Audacity.
4. Play sound in personal.
5. Stop sound.
6. Stop recording.
7. Cut out the excess.
Its as simple as that. Enjoy!
