Alpha would be a version that's not ready to be viewed by the public at all. It generally has parts missing or not fully integrated, and might have features that will eventually be cut from the final version. It's like a mock-up that's used by the production staff as a way to see where they're at in development, and how much further they have to go.
Beta is much closer to the final product and is usually released to a small portion of the population for testing purposes. It also might have features that will be cut, or that don't work yet. Beta versions are sometimes just free mostly functional as well, and the developer simply wants feedback before releasing the final version, or is trying to build demand or market awareness for the program.

Well, originally they were the two first letters of the Greek alphabet, but in modern day society, people have started to use them differently. Since you need help for computers, it usually means different versions. Alpha is the very first, and then Beta. After the Beta gets tested and fixed, they make the final version.

um im not 100% sure but in grade 9 i learnt that rutherford did an experiment and he discovered alpha and beta particles i believe and they’re like radioactive or radiation. i think alpha is positive and beta is negative. he also discovered gamma rays
