I run on the Windows Vista Home Premium OS. What steps should I take(assuming my all of my files are backed up) to completely delete the partition that contains my current operating system and create a new partition in its place to home a different OS? How do I manage drivers for the new OS?
Answer:
When you try to install a new operating system , it will ask you about the old. Will you like to create a new partition or would you like to use the existing one. Using the existing one will usually erase the original.
Now if you want to make sure that you 100% erase your old Operating System (Vista home), go and download hiren's bootdisk. Burn it using something Nero or MagicDisc. Once its burned bootup the pc using F12. selected partition tools and follow the instructions for the desired results. This should erase the computer the way you want it and allow for additional changes.
Now for the trickier part. If you want a different OS, which would you like to install? Linux, Windows or OSX? Of those which version would you like to install? Depending on what you’ve selected, there are multiple ways about preparing for the new Operating System.
If you select a windows install you will most likely need to find all the drivers for you computer before you decide to install the operating system. So look for your drivers at the manufactures site. If you want to make the process seamless and simple… i recommend using n-lite to streamline everything.
Finally if you’re using linux, it should detect most of the drivers and install them for you (that is the beauty of linux) if you are planning on running osx86… good luck getting support on that one.

Answer:
The installation program for the new OS will read your drive and reformat the drive effectively removing the old partition and all the files residing in that partition.
Drivers are sometimes residing in the OS itself(especially older drivers) otherwise the install disk that comes with your hardware will contain the drivers you need for the OS. Only the newest hardware might be a problem–the necessary drivers may not exist for your OS yet. Check the manufacturer's website for the newest drivers.
