i need to reformat my pc and wonder if partitioning is something i want to do. i have never partitioned before. What are the pros and cons of it?

Answer:
Not anymore. This was important back when partitions could only be a certain size. With Windows XP & Vista, simply format using NTFS and be done with it. No reason to lock yourself in to multiple partitions, which might make sense now but cause a problem later if you’re working on a huge video file or other project and run out of space.

From a performance perspective, you’re not accomplishing anything as you are still using the same data cable and I/O to access the drive. Some might argue about disk fragmentation, but simply defrag once in a while and call it good.

Pros: None anymore
Cons: Needless complexity, huge files are now common

Answer:
Pros: If you put “My Documents” on the other partition, then you can reformat the first partition without losing your data.

Cons: You lose space on your C: drive.
