My internet worked fine until today. I had 2 phone lines, one for the internet/my room, and one for the home. we got rid of the one for my room and ran the internet to the line we have left now. when i plugged it in and started using it, it was acting weird. it has been working on and off and acting crazy. i have been talking on the phone all day now and have got nothing else done between att, linksys, and xbox. they all blame it on my router, but in order for them to tell me how to mend it, i need to extend my warrenty, $32.99 worth of extending. I have reset the modem and router, i have tried damn near everything. when i was running it thru my router, only the personal would work on the web, and my xbox live would stop at dns. now nothing works. xbox states i need to open the ports on my router and gave me some numbers to put it, but idk how to do that. i mean i have been on the router ip page but im lost. please help me get this working. router is model BEFSR41 v3.

For a BEFSR41 go here: http://www.portforward.com/english/route…
If you follow the instructions exactly, and it still doesn't work, I'd suspect that the phone line you're connected to now is noisy. That would be something for the phone company to repair - if you're paying them for the wire. If you aren't, their repair bill will make the $32.99 seem good (probably something like $150 for the first 30 minutes).
If the phone line is a different number (not just a different wire on the same line), I'd even more strongly suspect the phone company.
Connect your computer to the Linksys by cable. Connect the Linksys to the modem. Turn on the modem. Wait for the lights to stabilize. Turn on the Linksys. Wait for the lights to stabilize. Turn on the personal.
Run your web browser, go to 192.168.1.1, log in, and go to the Status page. As soon as you lose connectivity, refresh that page. If the Linksys isn't still commected (an IP address, a gateway address and at least one DNS address), it's either a bad connection (which is what I suspect), a bad modem or a bad router. Either of the first two is AT&T's problem. If the router is really bad, spend $45 on a WRT54G - it's only a few dollars more than the warranty on yours, it's under a new warranty and it's a superior router. (And you don't have to go any further than the nearest Wal-Mart to get it.)
Or it could be that you have a few phones and things plugged into the phone line without filters. Every single device plugged into a phone jack - except the modem - MUST have a filter on it, whether it's being used(or even plugged into power) or not.
Answer:
You have DSL? You should go with cable World wide web service if you plan on using XBOX Live. If you already have cable World wide web, you’ll have to do some port forwarding if your router isn’t compatible with XBOX Live. Go for the new Linksys WRT54G2 at a cost of about $50 and you won't have to worry about port forwarding. There is a good article on Bungie.net (Halo) website about port forwarding, if you don't buy a new router. Good luck.
