how does it all work? how do you know it's done right.
Answer:
Buy - You go to a registrar's web site. Most of them have little lookup forms to see if the name you want is available. If it is, you click the button that says you want that name (you don't actually buy it. You rent it for a fixed period of time) and the wizard will ask for your credit card information. Once the registrar has your money you'll get a notice that you now have the name. It should cost you $6 to $7 per year. If you pay more, you're being ripped off. If you want verification that it's been done right, use any WhoIs database to look up the registration information for that name, and you'll see your information sitting out on that page.
Sell - you find someone who's willing to pay you to relinquish your rights to that name, which very rarely happens, because it's too easy to just add a hyphen or something for the potential buyer to get almost exactly the same name for $6 to $7 per year.
You won't get rich trading in domain names. Email me if you need more details.
