I'm renting a room and want to set up my computer. If I just add a modem without a router, will that affect the other renters computer's internet connection? A wireless router would be best but the other person does not have wireless.
Answer:
You cannot add a second modem. Instead, set up a wireless router that also contains some wired ports (check the Linksys line of routers) close to where the other person plugs in. Then he or she can remain wired and you can go wireless!
Answer:
You will be sharing the internet connection. If you are downloading a large file, the other computers connected may see a reduction in their internet speed.
Chances are neither of you will notice a difference though.
Answer:
You cannot add a second modem to a DSL connection. DSL is point to point and can only have two ends. You are better off using a router or switch and running Cat5 or Cat6 cable to where you want your secondary connection.
Adding wireless capability to a desktop or laptop is fairly easy and something you could consider. USB wireless adapters are fairly common.
Answer:
it could just because the phone lines but they have to acess to it and if they dont have a router or modem in there room they cant get access to it b/c its not wireless
Answer:
what connection is in the room? Do you have a phone line that you pay for, if so you could have your own DSL service.
If you share a common phone line, then you need a router and run Ethernet to each PC.
Answer:
Renters computer internet connections are on DSL. Are you going to tap into them or have your own DSL account setup with a modem. If so you don't need a router, but you should get one anyway. Why? Because you'll have added security and less likely somone could hack into your system using hardware firewalls. You'll still need to use software firewall. I recommend 100% freeware from PC Tools Firewall Plus with XP and Vista.
If you get router get a wireless one from Dlink, there are some good ones from them like DIR-655 Wireless N, G, B Router. It's a bit high but you get your money worth. If you plan on switching to Cable Modem in the future.
If you're going to have others connect to your DSL get the wireless router and 5 or 8-port switch from netgear Fs105 or FS108 (8-port switch)
DSL - Modem —- Wireless Router —– 8-port switch wired
If the renters have their own DSL modem then you don't need to buy addtional switch. If you plan on adding them to your account then you would get the switch and run Cat 5e cables throughout the building. Wireless is better as you don't have to run the cables. But you'll need to add access point or better yet bridge repeaters thoughout the building. This is another option to go..
Answer:
You either need to subscribe to a second dsl connection, or to use the existing one you need a router connected for ALL the machines using the connection. You can not connect a second modem to the same line.
