I need REMEDIAL help with this. For instance, how do I create an HTML file? After that, how do I upload it? What the heck is a CNAME, and how do I change it? What is DNS? How do I point it anywhere? Thanks for the help!

Dear friend, if you want to start a website I suggest you to purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.
And any bad web hosting service would trouble you for a long period. At first, try to choose a reliable service to get rid of the subsequent problems.
As an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

Answer:
To create an HTML file you can hand type it in Text and save as WebPage.html or you can use a program like dreamweaver and front page that helps you avoid all the code typing. With the company you purchased your domain name from, log in and look for file upload its that easy. Make sure you home page is labled index.html so it will default to this page when opening your site. The rest im lost. Good luck
Answer:
-Look for a free HTML editor on the internet. google "html editor."
- to upload it, ask your web hosting service for instructions. each one will be slightly different.
For the other stuff, if you're running your own server, there aren't any remedial answers to it. I mean, you'll have to learn how DNS works. It's not something we can answer succinctly here.
See a good DNS tutorial online or the Cricket Liu book "DNS and Bind" published by OReilly.
